Can molecular markers be used for breeding disease-resistant bees?

Summary

Improving the resistance of honey bees to diseases and pests would benefit Australia’s honey bee industry and biosecurity. CRC for Honey Bee Products researchers investigated the feasibility of molecular markers as a tool to identify immunity proteins in bees. Molecular markers could provide a quick and effective way of measuring indicators of honey bee health, including disease resistance, hygienic behaviour, pollination efficiency, honey production and gentleness.
